What is Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus?
Laser treatment for onychomycosis (nail fungus) is a unique laser procedure using a laser called a 1064 Nd:yag. It works by gently heating the nail bed and in deeper layers of your nail. The laser light passes through the nails surface to reach the deeper layers where onychomycosis exists, like light through glass, leaving the surface intact. By gradually heating the deeper layer, the heat kills the fungus and over time as your nails will grow out clear, smooth and fungus free.
Is Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus safe for my skin?
This laser treatment is a “non-ablative” laser procedure and is extremely safe on all skin types & even tanned skin. Although we recommend that you avoid significant sun exposure prior to the treatment because of the risk of increased irritation, you may have a Laser Genesis treatment even after sun exposure. Although there are risks with any laser procedure, in our practice, this is one of the safest treatments performed.
What does Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus feel like?
This treatment will heat up the nails and in some patients, gets very warm. Most patient toerate this procedure well, but if you get uncomfortable tell your Doctor and a 5-10 second break can be enough to relieve the uncomfortable. Your practitioner will communicate with you during the entire procedure, ensuring your comfort and safety.
How long will Laser Genesis treatment take?
It usually takes about 30 minutes
How many Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus treatments will I need?
Generally only a single treatment is necessary. If the nails are severely infected it could take more.
When can I resume normal activities?
You may resume normal activities almost immediately. We do ask that you avoid direct sun exposure after treatment. After the first 24 hours you may resume the use nail polish.
