SCLEROTHERAPY

How is Sclerotherpay done?

Sclerotherapy is performed in a doctor's office. Sclerotherapy involves the injection into the problem vein of a sclerosing solution, using a micro-needle. This sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to turn white and then eventually disappear. The number of veins injected in one session is variable, depending on the size and location of the veins, and the patient's overall medical condition. The procedure usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes.

Is Sclerotherapy painful?

Most patients undergoing sclerotherapy report little or no discomfort. However some mild discomfort may occur, and a cramping sensation may be felt for 1 to 2 minutes when larger veins are injected.

How successful is sclerotherapy in treating varicose and spider veins?

Sclerotherapy works well for most patients. The first sclerotherapy treatment corrects about 50 percent to 70 percent of treated vessels, so 3-4 treatments are suggested for optimal results. A few (less than 10 percent) of the injected patients who have sclerotherapy do not respond to the injections at all. In these instances, different solutions or a different method, such as laser therapy, may be tried. In general, spider veins respond to treatment in 3 to 6 weeks, and larger veins respond in 3 to 4 months. If the veins respond to the treatment, they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear over time and need treatment.

What happens after the treatment?

There is no downtime. After the treatment you will be able to drive yourself home. You may resume your regular activities and are encouraged to walk, but to avoid vigorous activity on the first day of treatment. Depending on the type of veins treated, you may be advised to wear support hose or compression wraps to "compress" the treated vessels. Based on the kind of veins treated, a complete post care package and instructions will be prescribed for your individual needs.

How do I know if Sclerotherapy is right for me?

An initial consultation can determine whether Sclerotherapy is the best treatment for you depending on your current health and medical history. You are not eligible for sclerotherapy if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are bedridden. You can have sclerotherapy if you are taking birth control pills.
